New Cria born!

Well today we were really blessed by God’s graciousness.  Our Sarita seemed to be really in pain I noticed this morning & was watching her closely when I decided the vet needed to come & make an evaluation of her condition.  She had just passed her 11 month date so I felt assured that if she were in labor or the baby came, it was far enough along to survive.  After the vet examined Sarita she found that her cria was not in the normal position to birth, it’s head was headed the right direction but the legs were all twisted around the head.  After careful maneuvering, the vet got the baby in position all the while I was holding Sarita as still as I could along with our friend Ann who had come to help.  We worked with Sarita’s contractions but the vet had warned me that she thought the cria was already dead as it was not moving or resisting her hand inside.  I was heart sick but started saying prayers that a miracle was needed & hoped that God agreed.

We got the baby out & it was not moving & was blue around its mouth but when the vet laid it on the floor, I saw its mouth moving!  I yelled, “it’s alive”!  We immediately grabbed towels & started really rubbing to get the blood flowing & hoped that it would make it.  Within seconds the cria started to “pink up” & started making breathing noises & shaking it’s little head.  I was overcome with such joy & thankfulness.  The vet said she would have bet the farm that it was dead & called it a miracle as Ann & I both agreed.  At this point we hadn’t even thought about looking to see what the sex was so that was next and it is a boy!  14 lbs. 6 oz.  He is white just like mom & his dad.

After the vet assessed the cria & tended to Sarita, giving her a shot to help her contract to pass the placenta as well as an antibiotic for any possible infection, she left Ann & I with the new cria &  its mother.  Ann & I were discussing names & decided we needed a name that best suited this “miracle” & called Ann’s sister to see if she could look up the Spanish version of miracle.  So our new little miracle will be named “Milagro”.

In Spanish, the word milagro literally means miracle or surprise & it was a surprise to discover that our little cria survived!
